How Forms Develop Your Child's Coordination

by Instructor David Jue, IV Degree Black Belt

Forms, also known as patterns or Tul, are a combination of movements weaved together to create an aesthetic yet practical way of practicing martial arts. Through these exercises, students develop coordination while learning valuable self-defense skills.

Coordination and Movement

While performing forms, students execute different types of techniques and movements that slowly get more difficult and intricate as they progress higher in rank. A beginner rank form is simple: stepping forwards and back, turning and facing other directions. This is all while a student is also learning how to move their hands and eyes at the same time. As the beginner progresses, students learn new movements. These new movements get more difficult and require more training and coordination. Performing these techniques takes a lot of effort, focus, and practice to have the entire body come together for a single move.

Developing a student’s coordination makes children a well-round individual. Forms are a fun and safe way to develop your children’s coordination.
