These requirements are for students that are currently red stripe (3rd gup) and are testing for red belt (2nd gup).

PATTERNS

Toi-Gye

TOI-GYE: is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th Century), an authority on neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements refer to his birthplace on the 37th latitude and the diagram represents the Chinese character for "scholar."

READY POSTURE: Close ready stance B. 

KICKING

Sweeping Kick

HAND TECHNIQUES

Upset thrust with the flat fingertip
Side back strike with the back fist
Side thrust with the twin elbow
W-shape block with the outer forearm
Double pushing block with the inner forearm 
Front thrust with the flat fingertip
Pressing block with the x-fist

SPARRING

1-step sparring using sets 5, 6, 7, and 8

HOL SIN SUL

Throw against a turning kick
Throw against an inward knife-hand strike 
Throw against a double front choke
Throw against a side piercing kick

Required Knowledge 

Meaning of Red Belt: 

Red signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning opponents to stay away.

The nine (9) points to be observed while performing a pattern:

  1. Accuracy; a pattern should begin and end on the same spot.

  2. Correct posture and facing should be maintained at all times.

  3. The muscles of the body should be tensed and relaxed at the proper moments.  

  4. A pattern should be performed in rhythmic movements with an absence of stiffness.  

  5. Moves should be accelerated or decelerated according to the instructions in the encyclopedia.

  6. Each pattern should be perfected before going on to the next.

  7. Students should know the purpose of each movement.

  8. Students should perform each move with realism.

  9. Attack and defense techniques should be equally distributed among left and right hands and feet.

1-step sparring (sets 5, 6, 7)

SET 5

Attack: 

Pull back into a right L-stance, execute a reverse turning kick.

Defense:

Step forward into a left walking stance and execute a high side block with the right outer forearm.

Counterattack: 

Execute a low left front snap kick with the top of the foot.

While setting the foot down into a sitting stance, execute a left fore-fist punch followed by a right fore-fist punch in fast motion.

Return to Ready Position:

Attacker pulls back into a guarding block in a left L-stance and kihaps.

Attacker steps forward and defender steps backward to the ready position.

Set 5

SET 6

Attack: 

Step forward into a left walking stance and execute a middle reverse fore-fist punch.

Defense:

Step back into a right L-stance execute a knife-hand guarding block.

Counterattack: 

Slipping forward into a left walking stance, execute a right upper elbow strike. 

Take a step to the left and execute a high twisting kick with the right leg.

Return to Ready Position:

Attacker pulls back into a guarding block in a left L-stance and kihaps.

Attacker steps forward and defender steps backward to the ready position.

Set 6

SET 7

Attack: 

Step forward into a right walking stance and execute a middle obverse fore-fist punch. 

Defense:

Step forward into a left walking stance, executing a hooking block with the right hand.

Counterattack: 

While maintaining the hooking block with the right hand, execute a right middle turning kick.

Release the opponent’s hand and execute a right pressing kick.

Set the right foot down into a sitting stance while executing a right outward knife-hand strike. 

Return to Ready Position:

Attacker pulls back into a guarding block in a left L-stance and kihaps.

Attacker steps forward and defender steps backward to the ready position.

Set 7

SET 8

Attack: 

Step forward into a right walking stance and execute a twin fingertip thrust with the right hand.

Defense:

Step forward with the right leg into a sitting stance, execute a right inward block with the knife-hand while simultaneously executing a mid-side block with the left knife-hand.

Counterattack: 

Grab the side of the opponent’s hip with the right hand.

Moving the right foot into a sitting stance behind the opponent, prepare for a hip throw.

Lift opponent and proceed to throw opponent.

Return to Ready Position:

Attacker pulls back into a guarding block in a left L-stance and kihaps.

Attacker steps forward and defender steps backward to the ready position.
